We’ve got all the time in the world.
We open on some sort of psychic dream of King’s. It looks similar to the portal Luz opened (with all the magic boxes), but it’s evidently centered around the ship they’re on. But the really interesting thing is how King’s able to communicate with the Collector…
The Collector: I won’t be alone. I won’t be alone anymore!
King: Hello? Hello?
The Collector: Who said that? Who’s there? Wait! Wait wait wait! Don’t leave! Come back!
Despite the Collector expressing excitement over the prospect of, y’know, GENOCIDE, it seems from this interaction that they might just be lonely, since not many people have even been able to communicate with them.
Also, just since it’ll become increasingly relevant, characters refer to the Collector as both “he” and “they”, seemingly because the Collector himself doesn’t have many strong preferences on the matter, but I’ll mainly refer to them as “they”.
So, you may have noticed that in Season 2 (and particularly the past few episodes), the two-plot structure has been a bit more condensed, mainly because the story is narrowing to a single point (namely, the Day of Unity and all that entails). The two plots have naturally had more to do with each other as a result.
And now, with all the inhabitants of the Owl House wanted (except, ironically, King, who’s arguably the most powerful at this point), their adventures are gonna be mostly limited to the immediate demands of the plot.
First things first (well, after Luz tracks down Eda and Lilith through clues they left, intentional or otherwise), everybody needs to be brought up to speed on the situation. Or at least Luz and King filling them in on (and reminding the audience of) the events of the last episode they were in, as the adults are far more reticent to divulge their “plans” (that don’t exist).
Lilith: “I was sacrificed to the Grand Huntsman”?
Luz: So, turns out, King’s letter was sent by a group of Titan Trappers! And they may have tried to sacrifice King to The Collector, who they worship.
Eda: Oh! So you found a commune of bloodthirsty fanatics in a place that was supposed to be empty!
Lilith: Well, they couldn’t have been that scary, not without any Titans to trap.
Luz: Actually…King is a Titan.
King: Looks like I’m…due for a growth spurt soon.
While most of them understand that King’s dealing with some really complicated emotions right now, Lilith acts like he’s a god, and starts thinking of ways he could help in the fight against Belos (before Eda pulls out the parental veto).
Lilith: What are you doing? Tell her!
Eda: Tell her what? That we have no plan? That Belos is gonna win, that the Boiling Isles are doomed? The kids deserve one nice day before they realize how dire things are.
I really feel for Eda here – she wants to protect her very precious children, but the only way she can think to do that is by basically lying to them.
Eda: Alright, kids. The, uh, plan isn’t gonna be ready til tomorrow. But if you could do anything in the world today, what would it be?
King: Thanks, Eda, but I just want things to feel normal right now.
Luz: Well, I wanna go on a heist!
Eda: Of course you do.
So Eda and Luz fly off to do their heisting…leaving King with Lilith, who’s been groveling toward him ever since the reveal, and it’s not at all what he needs.
King: I just need some alone time…your Titan commands it?
I mean, if he really were left all alone, it would probably not be great for him, but this is just an excuse to escape Lilith.
This is not just any heist. It’s a heist to rescue King’s cuddle bunny, Francois.
Eda: You sure you want to do this for a stuffed toy? Wouldn’t you rather, I dunno, have a beach day?
Luz: Maybe if we had time for twenty more adventures, but we don’t! Besides, this is for King. He needs his buddy.
It’s a very fitting last (fun) adventure, as their first adventure was also to steal back something precious for King.
Eda: If we’re gonna do this, we gotta do it right. Belos isn’t taking any more chances with us, not after your little trip into his mind. If we wanna stay alive, we gotta be inconspicuous.
And King runs into Steve.
Steve: Lose your way, little guy?
King: Actually, I got to where I was going, but now I [shrug]. Hey, I know you. You’re Steve, from Lilith’s party! Shouldn’t you be, like, kissing the Emperor’s butt right now?
Steve: Probably. Heck, growing up, all I wanted was to be an Emperor’s Coven Scout, to be considered one of the best. I got what I wanted, but it’s not what I thought it was.
King: I hear that.
Steve: Belos is supposed to know everything, but why should he know what the Titan wants? Maybe the Titan doesn’t even know what he wants. Maybe he’s just some normal guy, you know?
And thus, King hitches a ride with Steve, because he’s actually pretty cool.
Meanwhile, Eda’s getting antsy because the heist is going far too smoothly. They managed to just waltz in with stolen uniforms and ask for the key to the warehouse.
Eda: If things get hairy, you fly out of here as fast as you can. Hey, don’t give me that face! Just say “okay”. Okay?
Back with King, he’s just chilling with Steve, seeing the sights, occasionally lending a hand. It’s a quiet reminder of what all’s at stake, without hitting you over the head with the feels (they’re saving that for later).
Then Eda catches Raine talking to one of the scouts, and suffice it to say that it’s obvious Raine has taken a personal interest in the search for Eda. So she calls them back up.
Eda: Listen, I don’t know what you’re hiding, but I do know that somewhere deep inside, you still care about me. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have let me walk free back at the Coven Parade. Raine, I know about the Day of Unity and the draining spell. Nope, I saw that expression, it is that bad, isn’t it? And that’s why…I need your help.
Raine: There’s no time for your schemes, Eda.
Eda: Wait! This is for my kids. They can’t be around during the Day of Unity. Put them in a castle bunker, get them on an airship, I don’t care, just- just keep them safe. If you do, I’ll give myself up right now.
Then dear old Terra interrupts, but Eda is quick enough with her helmet to avoid suspicion.
Eda: Awaiting further instructions, Head Witch.
Raine: Stay put. I’ll send someone to receive the package.
But Luz is not happy about this turn of events.
Luz: You’re sending me away? But I can help! Why don’t you get that yet? Call Raine back! Tell them there’s no package to receive! I’m not going anywhere until Belos is defeated!
Eda: No.
Luz: After everything we’ve been through, I can’t believe you’re still underestimating me! Fine. Let’s just get back to King.
Eda: You’re going with Raine. They’ll keep you safe.
Luz: You can’t make me.
Eda: Yes, I can.
And what follows is a heartbreaking skirmish where Luz uses all her skills to try to get past Eda, but it’s basically a foregone conclusion once Eda recalls Owlbert…that is, until the scouts notice all the commotion and capture them both.
Back to Steve & King’s Awesome Adventure…
King: You know Steve, I always wanted to have power, and to command respect, and fear! So now that I kinda have all that, why does my stomach feel all ugh?
Steve: Wants can change. So can people.
King: I don’t want people to see me as a big scary monster anymore.
Steve: Me neither.
King still wants to be respected – I think we all do, one way or another. But I think now he understands what it means to be feared, and that’s pretty lonely.
And Steve takes off his helmet. Then Lilith finally catches up.
Lilith: Let me shield you with my pitiful life, o powerful-
King: Stop! I’m still King. King! Is this how you acted with the Emperor? I’m sensing a little bit of a pattern with you…
Steve: Hey girl, I’ve been there! I can recommend a good therapist.
Luz: You happy now? This way, neither of us can stop Belos. Why couldn’t you just let me help with your stupid plan? Is it cause I’m a kid? Do you think I’m still that weak? Well?
Eda: It’s because there is no plan, okay? Me and Lilith don’t have magic, and we don’t have allies, we’re useless. We have you, and King. So I was gonna do anything to make sure that you were safe. But now, it’s all over.
Luz: Eda, can you hear me? I’ll listen to you now. I’ll do whatever you say! Just fight back! Please! Eda!
i can’t anymore
And then Luz gets to her destination.
Luz: Where is she? Take me to Eda! If you touch one single feather on her head, I’ll-
Eda: Luz, it’s okay!
Well, that was way more traumatizing than it needed to be! But evidently that’s just how Darius rolls.
Darius: I’m going to set you down, please try not to bite anyone.
The long and short of it is, Darius started teaming up with Raine after he captured them, and now this whole band of rebels has some sort of plan and some sort of bunker (which they were determined to keep secret until the last minute, aka now).
But first, Luz is here with the important questions!
Luz: Wait! Before you get into that, please tell me you have a cool rebel name?
Raine: Actually, we do. Allow me to introduce…
Darius: Wait, hold on!
Raine: The Covens Against the Throne…
Darius: We talked about this, you promised-
Raine: AKA
Darius: I did not agree to this name!
Raine: The CATs!
Luz: Everything’s come full circle, baby!
Never change. Any of it.
But after everyone’s settled in, there’s one last thing to take care of.
Well, after this. Eda also grabbed the palistrom wood she stole for Luz. Because in this family, stealing is caring!
Eda: I thought you’d want to carve your palisman. What do you say?
Luz: I shouldn’t. The Day of Unity is in two days. I have to focus on stopping Belos, and-
Eda: You goob. Hey, this isn’t all on you.
King: Yeah, we have teammates now! Meow meow!
Luz: What if the palisman doesn’t like me?
King: By my count, you’ve befriended more enemies than I have claws on my paw.
Eda: Plenty of witches and demons would’ve ditched this rock already. But you keep learning, and you keep fighting…what’s not to like, huh?
Luz: Thanks, Eda. I think I’m ready to carve.
Eda: Now, let’s take it slow. We’ve got all the time in the world.
Until next time…
